MALAYSIA - Malaysia won the 41st edition of the Merdeka Tournament by defeating Myanmar 2-0 at the Darulmakmur Stadium tonight.
The scoreline was not a reflection of Malaysia's dominance as they created many chances throughout the match but could not finish.
Some 25,000 fans thronged the stadium to provide the encouragement to the Malaysian team, with Ultras Malaya singing on the top of their voices throughout the match.
The win, however, was more satisfying given that the nation celebrates Malaysia Day on Monday. And the fans created a terrific atmosphere, refusing to budge from their seats despite the heavens opening up at halftime.
In the 3rd place play-off, Singapore bounced back from a lacklustre performance to edge Thailand 2-1.
It was Singapore's first win in the tournament following three straight defeats during the group stage matches, thanks largely to the efforts of midfielder Muhammad Shafiq Ghani, who returned from the senior team tour of China recently to join the squad with a first–half injury-time goal.
