MALAYSIA - Malaysia booked a place in the final of the 41st Merdeka Tournament with a come from behind 2-1 win over Myanmar at the Darul Makmur Stadium tonight, while Thailand took a step closer to the final when they edged Singapore 1-0.
Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee, "It was the fighting spirit of the players that made the difference. To be honest after missing so many chances in the first 45 minutes, I started having doubts that we could claw our way back into the game."
For Myanmar, in addition to the defeat, they suffered further agony as their key player, Kyi Lin was sent off deep into injury time, for a second bookable offence.
Thailand head coach Kairung Threejagsang said his tactical strategy paid dividends and the three points earned tonight will come useful when they face the Malaysians on Wednesday.
"Singapore started off slowly, went into defensive play early in the game and this prompted us to go on the offensive. I am satisfied with the result although we could have won with a bigger margin," said Kairung.
However, Singapore assistant coach K. Balagumaran added that the early onslaught by Thailand changed the match tempo but acknowledged that they lost to a team with several seniors and experience players.
