MALAYSIA - The 2010 FIFA World Cup frenzy will be aired over 10 dedicated channels that will bring all 64 matches live PLUS two other channels - Astro Arena (Ch 801) in Malay and Astro Wah Lai Toi (Cg 311) in Cantonese - for selected matches.
The 12 channels will be brought to Astro sports fans in both High Definition (HD) and Standard Definitin (SD) for one month from June 11.
This will be Astro's first HD broadcast on the World Cup on Astro B.yond.
This was announced at a media launch here on Tuesday by Astro chief executive officer Rohana Rozhan, who said that the move was in line with the organisation's commitment to bring the best of international and regional sports contents to Malaysia.
"We are happy to present the best of sports content for our three million households, with close to 12 million viewers.
"We have long recognised that Malaysians are great sports fans," she said.
She said Malaysians had enjoyed World Cup coverage on Astro every four years since 1998.
This year is even better for Astro sports customers as they can watch the World Cup matches in HD.
"In addition to Astro's TV and radio coverage, its sports customers will also enjoy inteactive features such as news updates, results abd statistics, live chats, players profiles and online games," she said.
Beyond TV, Astro sports customers can also enjoy live video streaming of all matches via www.astro.com.my/stadiumastro.
Rohana said Astro has also collaborated with Maxis Bhd to bring mobile content of the World Cup to Maxis customers via the Astro b.player application on hand-held devices.
This latest service by Astro B.yond enables live streaming of all matches, downloading of caller ringtones, news alerts and videos on hand phones.
